Taking a full motorcycle licence.

Whatever size of motorcycle you would like to ride, follow the simple steps below.

  1. You must have already taken and completed the C.B.T. course
  2. You must already have taken and passed the motorcycle theory test.

Both of the above steps can be taken in any order.

Your training school will have given you a recommendation of exactly how many days or sessions that you as an individual require to comfortably and safely pass the full U.K. motorcycle or scooter licence.

**Please note no two training schools are the same, we all do things slightly differently to enable the same end result, you learning to ride safely and passing your bike test!

  1. Take the appropriate amount of training you have been recommended to reach the standard required by the DVSA examiner on your test.
  2. Pass both parts of the DVSA motorcycle test.

This will all be arranged by your training school/ATB. We take care of the times, dates & making sure you get to the test centre at the correct time!

Test passed, you can now get rid of those L-Plates and start enjoying your new found freedom.

Costs of a Full UK Motorcycle Licence between £850 - £1500 approximately & will include:

Motorcycle Theory Test - £23

Compulsory Basic Training Course £175 - £225, including bike hire

Lessons including bike hire, between £600 - £1200. This is completely dependant on your skill & confidence level

DVSA Test fees £90.50

Different types of motorcycle tests.

What bike you can ride will depend on your age and the size of motorcycle the test is taken on.

So much nonsense and misinformation has been banded about over the previous years, so let's start at the beginning.

  1. You must have current valid C.B.T. and motorcycle theory test certificates.
  2. You do not need to take "all" of the tests in order to get a full bike licence, unless you are under 24 years of age.
  3. All D.V.S.A. motorcycle tests are the same for A1, A2, or A licence categories
  4. If you take the test on an automatic, you will only get an automatic bike or scooter licence.

At age 17+ you can take the full category A1 licence. This enables you to ride a maximum of a 125cc but no L-Plates, ride on motorways, carry passengers, get cheaper insurance and also never have to take the C.B.T. course again!

The test must be taken on a machine of 120 - 125cc and be capable of at least 55mph.

At age 19+ you can take the full category A2 licence. This enables you to ride any size of motorcycle but you are limited to a power to weigh ratio of 0.2kwh per kg, this means you can have a maximum of 47Bhp (35kwh) as long as the minimum kerbside weight is160kgs.

The test must be taken on a machine of at least 245cc with a minimum of 20kW (27Bhp)

Your training school or local motorcycle dealer will be able to best advise you on all suitable machines.

At age 24+ you can take the full category A motorcycle licence. This will enable you to ride any size of motorcycle with unlimited power.

The test must be taken on a machine of at least 595cc and weigh at least 180kg.

Please do not worry too much about all of the details. Your friendly, local training school will take care of all of the above for you.
